Jahangirnagar University


In 1970 Jahangirnagar University accustomed as a residential accessible university was established by the management of Pakistan. It operated as a project, during the first two years. Its first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mafiz Uddin Ahmad . The first group of students, a total of 150, was enrolled in four departments: Geography, Mathematics , Economics and Statistics. Its formal installation was deferred until January 12, 1971, when the university was launched by Rear Admiral S. M. Ahsan, the Chancellor.
The university was renamed after the independence of Bangladesh, as Jahangirnagar University by the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973.

The university stands on the west side of the Asian Highway, commonly known as the Dhaka-Aricha Road, and is 32 kilometers from the capital. Spread over a land area of 697.56 acres (2.8 km²)at Savar. The scenery of the land, with its calm rise and plains, is cheering to the eye. The loveliness of this university campus attracts tourists. There are a number of lakes that are occupied by migratory birds in the winter. Numerous red and white lilies, beautiful weeds and other water plants make these lakes soothing.
 At present 34 departments and Six Faculties along with two institutes, with added than fifteen thousand students, 672 teachers, 206 staffs and 1,200 other employees. Dr. M Anwar Hossain is the (26th july, 2012) Vice-Chancellor of the university. Jahangirnagar University is one of the arch Universities in Bangladesh.

Al-Beruni Hall

01. Al Beruni Hall: the oldest dormitory of the campus, named after Abū Rayān al-Bīrūnī,

02. Mir Mosharrof Hossain Hall: named after Mir Mosharraf Hossain,

03. A. F. M Kamaluddin Hall: named after one of the ex Vice Chancellors of Jahangirnagar University Dr. Prof. A.F.M Kamaluddin, a geographer, who died prematurely,

04. Shahid Salam Barkat Hall: named after two language martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement,

05. Moulana Bhashani Hall: named after Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani,

06. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall: named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,

07.  Shahid Rafiq Jabbar Hall: named after two language martyrs of Bengali Language Movement.

02 Fajilatunnesa Hall: named after the first Bengali female graduate in mathematics from University of Calcutta.

04. Pritilata Hall: named after Pritilata Waddedar

05. Begum Khaleda Zia Hall: named after Khaleda Zia

The Central Library of the university has a big library having a huge collection of book established in 1985. It is behind the monument of “Sangshaptak”. It has a collection of over 95,000 titles. There are more than 110,000 books and 14,000 hard bound journals and 22,000 online journals in the library. More than 170 students can seat and study in the library. There is also a Cyber Center in the premises of the library. The whole area of  university is covered with Wi-Fi technology.
The future plan of the library authority is to extend the library building and make the whole system computerized. Then it would be easier to lend the library books and the system would be more efficient.

Transportation

The University has a fastidious transportation system covered many places of Dhaka. University transportation authority has owned 24 buses covered different routes to Dhaka city. There are 70 drivers and staffs working hardly to maintain the schedule and giving the service.
