In 1970 Jahangirnagar University accustomed as a residential accessible university was established by the management of Pakistan. It operated as a project, during the first two years. Its first Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mafiz Uddin Ahmad . The first group of students, a total of 150, was enrolled in four departments: Geography, Mathematics , Economics and Statistics. Its formal installation was deferred until January 12, 1971, when the university was launched by Rear Admiral S. M. Ahsan, the Chancellor.
The university was renamed after the independence of Bangladesh, as Jahangirnagar University by the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973.

At present 34 departments and Six Faculties along with two institutes, with added than fifteen thousand students, 672 teachers, 206 staffs and 1,200 other employees. Dr. M Anwar Hossain is the (26th july, 2012) Vice-Chancellor of the university. Jahangirnagar University is one of the arch Universities in Bangladesh.

The future plan of the library authority is to extend the library building and make the whole system computerized. Then it would be easier to lend the library books and the system would be more efficient.
